Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father was absent from the family, and so she was taken care of by her mother, grandparents and godparents. When she was a young girl Ford was afflicted with anxiety due to an obsessional disorder. Ford became interested in acting during her teenage years she joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford gained entry to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but decided after a week that she would not be a good fit there. Ford returned to Central School of Speech and Drama and, after her fourth application, she was finally admitted. Shaun Dingwall - who later was the character Pete Tyler in Doctor Who - was one of her classmates. Ford completed her degree in 1993 however in the meantime she already had made her television debut in a 1991 episode in the show Surgical Spirit; she adopted the professional name "Catherine Tate". During the Nineties, Tate could be found on TV in shows like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. In addition to her regular stage work, Tate was a part of in the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate's stand-up comedy, which she began adding to her set in 1996, soon gained the attention of her peers.
